Let’s explore Jesus’ encounters with water, a recurring and significant symbol in the Bible. These interactions, like his conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, reveal key insights into his divine nature and his provision for us. This exploration goes beyond simply recounting biblical stories. We’ll examine how Jesus uses water to illustrate his offer of sustenance that goes beyond physical needs. From the ‘living water,’ he offers the Samaritan woman, to the wine created at the wedding feast, and even in how he works in our lives today, we’ll see how he provides spiritual satisfaction that is both deep and lasting. Join us as we delve into these powerful moments and discover how Jesus’ interactions with water can refresh and transform our own lives. Let’s explore how he offers ‘living water’ that deeply satisfies us.

John, Jesus, and a new day
Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus comes from Galilee and asks to be baptized by John. John is taken aback by the request because he knows who Jesus is and knows that he himself is merely a man following the calling God placed on his heart. Imagine the look on his face when he says, “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you, so why are you coming to me?” (Matthew 3:14). John tries to make clear to Jesus that, in fact, JOHN needs to be baptized by him not the other way around.

Before this meeting, John had been teaching about Jesus, the coming Messiah, and baptizing people in Jesus’ name. Jesus knows that being baptized by John is a perfect next step and will inspire those baptized in his name and those considering their next step of faith.

As Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God descended from heaven, saying, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” (Matthew 3:17). God publicly expresses his trust and affection for Jesus, knowing what his future holds. Scripture says it was a voice from heaven, which could mean that the Spirit of God did not actually descend from heaven, yet Jesus saw a vision of it.

This interaction between John, Jesus, and God is an excellent reminder that seeking God in times of need can help redirect us back on track in life. When our world feels uncertain and chaotic, Jesus reminds us that we are not alone. Jesus wants you, me, and the world to know that sometimes our actions or words may not be perfect, but the Lord will always give us a second chance or a new day to improve.

Prayer for today:
God, thank you for sending Jesus into the world to show us the way through life. Thank you for making a way for us to follow you and find meaning and purpose. As we enter this new day, help us sense your presence and direct our path toward all that you have in mind for us. Amen.
