![]() Turning our attention to the symbol of water, a substance deeply intertwined with purification, life, and healing, we will experience the transformative power of Jesus. Jesus frequently uses water as a conduit for his literal and metaphorical restorative touch. As we delve into these passages, let us consider how water, in its fluidity, reflects the flowing grace and life-giving presence of Jesus. May these readings remind us that, even in our own periods of dryness and spiritual thirst, Jesus offers a wellspring of healing, washing away our burdens and renewing us from within. In the wind and the rain Mark 4:35-41 Sometimes, it feels like bad things happen all at once. It’s not just that my preschooler gets sick. That same week, the basement floods, the microwave dies, the car needs a new battery, and a client is unhappy because I’m home with a sick kiddo and can’t meet their deadline. And during these times of overwhelm, it’s easy to feel like the negative things are insurmountable. It feels like you’re right in the middle of a nasty thunderstorm — the rain and wind and thunder and lightning are so overwhelming that you can’t even hear yourself think. The disciples found themselves in the middle of a real storm, with Jesus just sleeping away in the stern. They felt overwhelmed and completely at a loss, just like I often do in the storms of my own life. And they called out, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” I feel that deeply. I’ve been there, calling out to God, “Where are you? Don’t you care? Why are you allowing this to happen?” And just like that, Jesus calms the storm. The thunder and wind stop. It’s quiet. The silence is deafening. The disciples are safe. There’s a pause. Then he says, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” We have the power to decide how we respond to the storms in our lives. Fear itself isn’t a bad thing — it’s healthy. Our response is what’s important. Do we let the fear take over? Do we feel like we’re all alone, fighting against the wind and rain? Or do we choose to remind ourselves of God’s promise that nothing can separate us from his love? Do we choose to have faith that he has the entire world in his hands? Prayer for today: Lord, thank you for being in control. Thank you for having a plan and being there to calm the storms in our lives. Please help us have faith in your promises, in the many times you’ve been there for us. Help us to find refuge in your Word and peace in the midst of the wind and rain. By Kathryn Marr |
