The name Golgotha – “the place of the skull” – paints a vivid and somber picture. This hill, situated just outside the ancient city of Jerusalem, holds a significant place in history and belief. More than simply a location, Golgotha embodies a powerful duality, a place where the harsh reality of mortality intersects with the promise of renewal. This “place of the skull” stands as a testament to profound contrasts, a site where the finality of death gave way to the dawn of new beginnings. From the connotations of decay inherent in its name, to the transformative potential of the pivotal event that transpired there, Golgotha invites contemplation on the enduring themes of sacrifice and the possibility of life emerging from death.

He chose to be fully present
Matthew 26:17-30

The echoes of the Last Supper resonate through the centuries as a pivotal moment in religious history and a profound source of guidance for navigating the complexities of everyday life, especially during times of suffering and uncertainty. Reflecting on that final meal shared by Jesus and his disciples offers lessons that can anchor us when life’s storms gather.

The Last Supper powerfully reminds us of the importance of presence and intentional connection. Knowing his time was short and fraught with unimaginable suffering, Jesus chose to be fully present with his closest companions. He broke bread with them, shared wine, and engaged in intimate conversation. In my own life, when facing hardship or ambiguity, I’m tempted to withdraw and isolate in fear and anxiety. Jesus models the value of leaning into relationships and actively seeking connection with those who offer support and understanding. Being present, genuinely listening, and sharing can be a vital source of strength and comfort when the future feels uncertain.

Love and forgiveness are the overarching themes of the Last Supper. Despite knowing the betrayal and denial that awaited him, Jesus continued to love his disciples. He offered a new commandment: to love one another as he had loved them. This profound message is particularly relevant during suffering when anger, resentment, and bitterness can easily take root. Jesus’ posture encourages us to cultivate forgiveness towards ourselves and others. Holding onto negativity only intensifies our pain. Choosing love and forgiveness, even when difficult, can lead to healing and inner peace amidst uncertainty.

The lessons of the Last Supper are not confined to a specific historical event. They offer timeless wisdom for navigating the challenges of daily life. We can find strength and guidance to weather the storms of uncertainty and emerge with greater resilience and a deeper understanding of the enduring power of compassion and faith.

Am I choosing to be fully present today? In what ways can I prepare myself to remember and honor Jesus’ sacrifice this week? Where can I bring hope, love, and forgiveness to someone else this week?
