Get a drink John 7:37-39 As a child, I remember traveling on a tour bus, in absolute awe of the majestic mountain before me in Colorado. We had stopped to drink from a fresh mountain stream for the first time. It was the most delicious water I can recall; I remember savoring the last drop. I also remember wading and kick-dancing in the stream, but that’s another story. The sight of the mountain, the crisp air, and the taste of cold, clear water are forever imprinted and never forgotten. Isaiah 48:21 says, “They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock as it gushed, streams overflowed…” God’s provision of water during their decades in the desert was recognized during the feasts Jesus attended during this season of Lent. It’s also a picture of the life of Jesus, the Rock Himself, being struck/sacrificed so that we might have life/living water.) Without water, life as we know it would cease. It’s in the air, our bodies, and food. It can survive significant temperature variations and remain water; it has no expiration date. When poured into the earth, water can leak into tiny fissures, create caves, and even crack boulders. Likewise, living water can penetrate the depths of our being, break through barriers, and cleanse the darkest parts of us. Jesus is the living water, providing the necessary spiritual nourishment for our souls to thrive. “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” By this, he meant the Spirit, who would be given to all who believe in Jesus after his death and resurrection. As a Jesus follower, his presence within you is a deep reservoir designed to provide for those around you. Get a drink, and become one. Prayer for today: Jesus, draw us near and quench our thirst with your living water. Help us find the deep satisfaction that comes from following and trusting you. Fill us to overflowing that we might be a source for those around us, inviting them to come and drink and receive your goodness. By Shelly Huston |
